Winter Workshop Weekend

Immerse yourself in three full days of choreography, aster teachers, lectures, and specialty classes for dancers. The Winter Workshop Weekend is designed to challenge students, introduce them to emerging techniques and topics in dance, inspire their creativity, and provide opportunities to grow into the strongest dancer he or she can be. Over the course of the weekend, all dancers will also be set in a new piece to be performed at our end of year Showcase. The Winter Workshop Weekend will be held January 27-29th, 2017 and is open to all dancers ages 8 and up. Tuition for the workshop is $140. Register now to reserve your spot as space is limited!

Lynn Vernon will be our Winter Workshop Weekend Guest Choreographer. She will be setting a modern dance piece on our students with an emphasis on partnering and weight-sharing. Ms. Lynn has been a public school educator for over 20 years and is currently the dance specialist at Wendell Creative Arts and Science Elementary in the Wake County Public School System.
We are thrilled to welcome several Master Teachers to Open Arts for the Winter Workshop Weekend including:
*Megan Dillon - Dancer with Charlotte Ballet, Ballet Met Columbus, and Colorado Ballet
*Aya Shabu - Alumni of the African American Dance Ensemble and Artistic Director of Shabutaso (West African, Haitian, Cuban, and Afro-Brazilian Dance Company)
*Dayna DeFilippis - BFA and MFA in Dance and former Director of Dance at the University of Nebraska, Kearney
In addition to dance specialists, the Winter Workshop Weekend will also bring fitness and health professionals to Open Arts to share their expertise with our students. These guests include:

*Rachel Pohlman - Nutrition Program Manager at the Poe Center for Health Education
*Shannon Adkins - Physiotherapist
*Melissa and Bella Verdicchio - Yoga Instructors

Summer Master Class Intensive

The Summer Master Class Intensive Series will return in 2017 with guest instructors in a variety of styles including ballet, tap, jazz, musical theater, and more. Details will be available soon, but for now, read about our guest teachers from last summer!

Our 2016 Summer Ballet Master Class will be taught by Kathy Reeves.
Kathy Reeves began her dance training at the age of five and at the age of fifteen, she left home to study ballet at The North Carolina School of the Arts. She studied with many ballet greats such as Mimi Paul, Melissa Hayden, Joysanne Sidimus, Gyula Pandi, Gina Vidal, Robert Lindgren, and Duncan Noble. Kathy was awarded two merit scholarships and had many performance opportunities at the school including being chosen to dance in an original piece choreographed by Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux. Upon graduation from high school, Kathy continued her studies on scholarship at The Pennsylvania Ballet School, where she had the honor of studying with Lupe Serrano, Fiona Fuerstner, and Dane Lafontsee. She performed with The Pennsylvania Ballet for two years, under the direction Of Robert Weiss. Kathy continues to teach ballet in Durham, NC.
Our 2016 Summer Modern Dance Master Class will be taught by Nicole Lawson.
NIcole is a recent graduate of Meredith College with a B.A. in Dance Studies. In addition to her studies at Meredith College, Nicole has also studied from a variety of teachers at the American Dance Festival and Performing Arts in Context in Buenos Aires. Her modern choreography has been showcased in the American Dance Festival Student Mobile Tour and the Triangle Dance Project's Emergence Concert.
Our 2016 Summer Jazz Master Class will be taught by Paige Hauser.
Paige is the President of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington's "Physical Graffeeti" Hip-Hop Dance Crew. Physical Graffeeti is a cutting-edge hip-hop and street dance crew that has won first place honors at a variety of urban dance competitions.
Our Summer 2016 Musical Theater Master Class will be taught by Gretchen Bruesehoff-Wiles.
Gretchen is a Vocal Performance major from Elon University. She received her Masters Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Iowa. Gretchen is currently a vocal music instructor at Elon University in Burlington, NC.
