FROM THE DIRECTOR
Click the video for a run-down of the newsletter with me 🙂 – or read on to see all that we have in store at Open Arts this month!
It’s always amazing to me how quickly I find myself typing the final newsletter of the season each year. Looking back, I am so grateful for a season full of tremendous growth for all of our dancers, exciting new opportunities, and special memories full of love and laughter. We were honored to share dance with the kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Durham, share talents at our first ever fall festival and Open Talent Night, celebrate the season with our 2nd Annual Holiday Spectacular, make new memories with our Nutcracker and Holiday sharings, host families for a SUPER fun Super Hero Ball, celebrate spring at Kids Night Out, and ring in the Showcase Season with the best Picture Day yet. We are also excited to celebrate our 4th Showcase this June and travel to Disney to dance the world at Epcot this summer. Thank you to each of you for making this such a wonderful season and for making Open Arts the best place to call home.
As busy as we all are, I hope we will be able to enjoy these last four weeks of class and the rehearsals leading up to the Showcase. We’ll be showing our studio pride with Studio Spirit Month and celebrating the growth and achievement of our sweet dancers all month long. May we all focus on joy we’ve shared together this season, the many skills your child has learned – in both dance and life, the friendships we’ve made, and the courage and commitment each child has shown all season long. Sometimes it’s easy to get distracted by the “final product,” if the dance was perfect, the bun was flawless, the steps were all together, when really, the JOURNEY was the real gift all along. Celebrate every special moment of these next few weeks and join me in working hard to make sure all of our students feel special, loved, and accomplished. Because truly, they are.
Just another quick reminder that our Mobile App, which you can download from the Google Play Store and the Apple Store, is the easiest way to register for classes and events, make payments, update your account AND receive push notification for studio events and reminders. In addition, we also have our new Google Calendar, which you can sync to your own calendar so you’ll never miss an Open Arts event again.
I can’t wait to celebrate our wonderful students together with you. See you at the studio soon. xo
OPEN ARTS PERFORMANCE COMPANY AUDITIONS
All current Open Arts students who will be 10 by September 1st are invited to audition for the Open Arts Performance Company. Auditions will be held on Saturday, May 6th from 2-3pm. Dancers interested in auditioning will need to wear a Leotard and Tights ONLY with hair in a bun. Bring ballet shoes if you have them for a barre warm-up and we will do a modern sequence and combination in our bare feet.
If you’re thinking about auditioning this year, here are a few things to consider:
- OAPC Members must take at least 2 dance technique classes a week and one class must be ballet.
- OAPC Members are required to take a 4-week dance class or dance-based camp each summer.
- OAPC Rehearsals will take place on Thursdays from 7:15-8:30pm next season.
The Open Arts Performance Company is designed to maximize the individual’s dance and performance training through intensive study, performance opportunities and community service. OAPC Members participate in several community events, performances, and fundraisers each season and are expected to make their participation in the company a top priority. If you have any questions about the experience, audition, or requirements, please let Ms. Maia know.
STUDIO SPIRIT MONTH
Studio Spirit Month kicks off this week with TWIN WEEK. Call, text, message your dance friends and plan to wear the same color leotard, style your hair in the same way, or find other fun ways to match and be “twins” (or triplets, quadruplets, etc).
May 8-13th we’ll Knock Their Socks Off with CRAZY SOCK WEEK. Mix em, match em, layer em, wear em however you want. Show off your personality by wearing your favorite socks to dance class.
May 15-20th it’s time to pull out your tights and capes for one last chance to dress up as your favorite caped crusader for SUPER HERO AND VILLAIN WEEK.
May 22-27th is our last week of classes and is always SHOWCASE Ts WEEK. Wear your Showcase Ts or Tanks to class and help us build excitement for the best showcase ever!!!
SHOWCASE T-SHIRTS + FLOWERS + PROGRAM ADS + DVDS
If you ordered a Showcase T-Shirt or Tank, we will distribute them as soon as they arrive in the next week or so. We will have a SMALL selection of extra shirts we ordered that will be available for sale in the lobby once they arrive. If you ordered a Showcase Program Ad, please be sure you have turned in your artwork. And make sure you receive a proof and/or confirmation from me by May 6th.
We are still accepting orders for Showcase Flowers through May 15th and Showcase DVDs through June 2nd. Fill out the yellow SHOWCASE EXTRAS Order Form in the Lobby or place your order online from our SQUARE STORE.
Don’t forget that we have a Showcase Page on our Website. It’s chock full of tips and tricks, links to our Pinterest Board with Hair and Make-up Tutorials, Dates and Reminders, and all the information you need to know.
You will receive 2 Comp Tickets per child to the Showcase. We will distribute these tickets at Dress Rehearsal. Additional Tickets are $12 each and will be available through the Duke University Box Office Website or by visiting or calling the Box Office. Kids ages 3 and under are free.
We will have sign-up sheets in the lobby for SHOWCASE VOLUNTEERS – we will need a few moms to help backstage for each show and we will need 10 Ushers to assist with Ticketing and Seating for each show. Ushers are required to arrive 45 minutes prior to the show’s start time and may be asked to assist after the show begins with seating late arrivals. We do allow Ushers to choose their seats before we open the doors as a thank you for your time. Backstage moms will need to attend the Volunteer Meeting on Thursday, May 18th at 7:00pm. You will be helping us entertain the dancers backstage, line them up before heading back stage, assisting with shoe and costume changes, and helping with student pick-up after the show. You WILL be able to watch your child’s dances from the theater but you won’t need a ticket for the show!
You can download the Showcase Details Sheet to see all of the schedules for In-Studio Rehearsals, Dress Rehearsals, and Performances. We also have the schedules posted in the lobby. Please remember that all rehearsals are mandatory.
The Open Arts Performance Company is once again selling LOVE NOTES that will be delivered backstage to your dancer before his or her show. Purchase your Love Note for $1 (bring cash!) the last week of classes and In-Studio Rehearsals. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Our Military Kids, helping to provide sports, arts, and tutoring scholarships for the children of our military families. Open Arts will also be making a matching donation, so be sure to show your love to your favorite dancer and help us show support for some truly amazing SUPER Heroes.
Make plans to join us for the last 10-15 minutes of class during the final week of classes. We will share our dances with you, go over important Showcase announcements, and recognize our students for their year of hard work.
Once again, we have made a banner for you to use on Facebook and social media to support your favorite dance and the show. You can click the image below to download the file. Don’t forget to tag us in all of your Showcase experiences and use #iheartopenarts and #supershowcase
Be sure to turn in your Priority Pre-Registration Form as soon as possible. We will be opening registration to the public this month and once registration goes live, we cannot guarantee space in all classes for returning students as we can at this time.
Here’s a few key points about Priority Pre-Registration you need to know:
- There is a $20 Returning Student Registration Fee due at the time of registration ($10 each additional child, $40 for families of 3 or more)
- We have highlighted the suggested Level(s) for your child. Choose a class or classes in which you’d like to enroll, turn in your form to the front desk, and you’re all set! If you have payment information on file, we will charge the registration fee for you. If not, please include payment with your form.
- If you lost your form – we have extras at the front desk!
- I know August seems a long way away, but if you’d like to return next season, it’s best to register for the class you think might best fit your schedule NOW as we cannot guarantee any spots once we open registration to the public.
